Age Relaxation in Government Jobs — Category-Wise Breakdown
Category-wise age relaxation in SSC, UPSC, Railway, and bank jobs — SC/ST, OBC, PwD, ex-servicemen, and widows — with examples and rules.
Age limits are not the same for everyone
Every Sarkari notification mentions a minimum and maximum age — "18–27 years," "20–32 years," and so on. What many candidates miss is that the upper age limit is relaxed for reserved categories, ex-servicemen, PwD candidates, and sometimes for specific groups like widows or earthquake victims. These relaxations are cumulative only where the notification explicitly allows — read the fine print every time.
Standard central government relaxations
For most SSC and UPSC exams, the following broad framework applies (always verify against the specific notification):
- SC / ST: 5 years relaxation in upper age limit
- OBC (NCL): 3 years relaxation
- PwD: 10 years (13 years for SC/ST PwD, 8 years for OBC PwD in many exams)
- Ex-servicemen (General): Up to length of service + 3 years, subject to max cap
- Ex-servicemen (SC/ST): Additional relaxation as per rules
- Central Govt employees (Group C/D): Up to 5 years in some recruitments with service conditions
Quick tip: Use our age eligibility calculator with your date of birth and category — manual counting errors cost eligible candidates their application.
How cumulative relaxation works
Suppose an exam's General upper age is 30. An OBC candidate gets 33. An OBC PwD candidate may get 33 + applicable PwD relaxation depending on notification wording — but not always a simple addition of every benefit. Some exams cap total relaxation. UPSC CSE has detailed tables; SSC mentions relaxations in its notice PDF.
Banking exams — IBPS and SBI
IBPS PO/Clerk typically follow: OBC 3 years, SC/ST 5 years, PwD 10 years, ex-servicemen as per extant rules. SBI mirrors similar slabs. There is no EWS age relaxation in standard bank notifications. Female candidates do not get automatic age relaxation in central banking unless a specific scheme says so.
State PSC and police jobs
States add their own layers — domicile quotas, women's relaxation (common in state police constable exams), and sportsperson quotas. A relaxation valid in Bihar PSC may differ from UPPSC. Never assume central rules apply to state notifications.
Proof you need at verification
- SC/ST certificate for caste-based relaxation
- OBC-NCL certificate for OBC relaxation
- PwD certificate from designated medical authority
- Discharge book / service certificate for ex-servicemen
- Government service certificate for departmental candidates
Watch out: Applying under a relaxed age category without valid certificate leads to rejection at DV — even if you cleared the exam. Arrange certificates before the application deadline, not after results.
Common myths
- "EWS gets age relaxation" — No, not in standard central rules
- "Women get 5 years everywhere" — Only where notification specifies
- "Gap years reduce eligibility" — Age is calculated from DOB, not education timeline
Practical advice
Calculate your effective upper age limit before buying exam forms. If you are near the border, check whether your category pushes you into eligibility. Track attempt limits separately — UPSC CSE caps attempts by category; SSC has no universal attempt limit but age still binds you.
