IBPS Exams Explained — PO, Clerk, RRB, and Specialist Officer in Simple Terms

What is IBPS, and why does it matter?
If you have ever searched for a bank job in India, you have almost certainly come across IBPS. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts common recruitment exams for public sector banks (except SBI, which runs its own process). Instead of applying to each bank separately, you write one IBPS exam and get allotted to a participating bank based on your rank and preferences.
For lakhs of graduates, IBPS is the most practical route into a stable banking career — decent starting salary, annual increments, and the chance to grow into branch manager or specialist roles over time.
IBPS PO — Probationary Officer
IBPS PO is the flagship exam for officer-grade posts. Selected candidates join as Probationary Officers, usually after a training period at a bank's staff college. Work involves customer handling, loan processing, branch operations, and eventually team supervision.

IBPS Clerk — Customer support and operations
The Clerk exam fills clerical cadre posts — cash handling, passbook updates, data entry, and front-desk work. It is often less competitive than PO but offers the same job security. Many clerks prepare for internal promotions to officer grade after a few years of service.

- Selection: Prelims → Mains (no interview in most cycles)

IBPS RRB — Regional Rural Banks
RRB exams recruit for Regional Rural Banks that serve semi-urban and rural areas. There are two main scales: Officer Scale I (similar to PO) and Office Assistant (similar to Clerk). If you are comfortable working in district towns and want slightly lower competition, RRB is worth considering.
IBPS Specialist Officer (SO)
The SO exam is for professionals — IT officers, HR, law, marketing, agriculture, and Rajbhasha (Hindi). You need a relevant degree (B.Tech for IT, LLB for law, etc.). Competition is narrower because the eligibility pool is smaller, but the syllabus includes professional knowledge sections.

How IBPS allotment works
After you clear all stages, IBPS publishes a provisional allotment list. You rank banks in order of preference during application. Higher rank plus sensible preferences usually gets you one of your top choices. You cannot pick the exact branch city at joining — that comes later through internal posting.

Prelims focus on speed: Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English (Clerk adds Hindi/Regional language in some cases). Mains goes deeper — General Awareness, Computer Knowledge, and Data Analysis for PO. Start with previous-year papers and a solid mock-test routine.

IBPS vs SBI — quick note
SBI conducts its own PO and Clerk exams with a similar pattern but separate notification. Some candidates apply to both IBPS and SBI in the same year. The work culture is comparable; SBI is the largest bank with slightly different promotion rules.
