Police Constable vs Police SI — Eligibility, Salary, Preparation
Police Constable vs Sub-Inspector (SI) — compare eligibility, salary, physical test, exam pattern, and preparation for state police jobs.
State police recruitment drives see queues at exam centres and PET grounds every year. Two posts dominate the notifications — Police Constable (constable, head constable pipeline) and Police Sub-Inspector (SI). Both wear khaki. Both serve the same department. But the entry qualification, exam level, pay, and authority are different enough that you should pick your target deliberately — not apply to both without a plan.
Police Constable — entry at 10th or 12th
Most states recruit constables for 10th or 12th pass candidates. Age typically 18–25 years (relaxations for SC/ST/OBC). Selection includes written exam (sometimes CBT), PET (physical efficiency test), PST (physical standards — height, chest), medical, and document verification.
Work involves beat patrolling, traffic duty, law and order deployment, station housekeeping, and assisting SI/inspetors during investigations. Pay is Level 3–4 in many states — roughly ₹25,000–₹45,000 gross initially with DA and risk allowance in some states.
Police SI — officer-grade entry
Sub-Inspector is the first supervisory rank — you lead a team of constables, register FIRs, investigate cases, and handle police station operations under Inspector guidance. Qualification is usually graduation in any stream. Some states require state language proficiency.
Exam is tougher — prelims, mains (descriptive in many states), PET, and interview. Pay starts around Level 6 — roughly ₹40,000–₹70,000 gross. Promotion to Inspector and beyond follows state police service rules.
Side-by-side
| Factor | Constable | Sub-Inspector (SI) |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum education | 10th or 12th pass | Graduation |
| Exam difficulty | Moderate — GK, reasoning, state GK | Higher — prelims + mains + essay |
| Physical test | Strict — run, long jump, height/chest | Strict — standards slightly relaxed vs constable in some states |
| Authority | Follow orders, ground duty | Supervise, investigate, register FIR |
| Promotion ceiling | Head Constable → ASI (slow) | Inspector → DSP through dept exam |
Preparation strategy
Constable: Focus on state GK (current DGP, recent schemes, state history), basic maths, Hindi/regional language, and daily running for PET. Many candidates fail on physical test, not written exam — start running 3 months before.
SI: Prepare like a mini PSC — broader GK, current affairs, reasoning, and descriptive paper practice. Physical test still eliminates candidates who ignore it while buried in books.
Can a constable become SI?
Yes — through departmental promotion exams after several years of service. But the quota is limited and competition among serving constables is intense. Direct SI recruitment through state exam is faster if you have a degree.
Find state police vacancies on Naukri Milega and verify height/chest requirements in the official notification before applying.
Quick tip: Start PET training before the written exam — not after. States like UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan eliminate thousands on the run and long jump every cycle. A 1600m run under 6 minutes needs 8–12 weeks of practice if you are not already athletic.
Watch out: Tattoos on visible body parts, flat foot, knock knees, and colour blindness can disqualify you in medical stage. Check medical standards in the notification — do not wait until after the written exam to discover this.
