SSC CGL Posts Explained — Inspector, Auditor, TA, AAO in Plain Language
Plain-language guide to popular SSC CGL posts — Inspector, Auditor, Tax Assistant, AAO, and more — with work profile, salary, and posting.
SSC CGL notifications list dozens of post codes — MEA Assistant, CBI Sub-Inspector, Income Tax Inspector, Auditor, Tax Assistant, Assistant Accounts Officer, and many more. The form asks you to mark preferences, but how do you choose if you do not know what these jobs actually involve day to day? Here is a plain-language breakdown of the most popular posts so you can fill your preference list wisely.
How post preference works
After you clear all tiers, SSC allots a post based on your rank, category, and the preference order you submitted. Higher rank gets first pick. You cannot change preferences after the deadline. So read this before you tick boxes — not after the result.
Inspector posts — field and desk mix
Income Tax Inspector — Works under CBDT. Field postings involve search and survey operations, scrutiny of returns, and TDS verification. Desk postings handle assessment and administrative work. Uniform is worn in some field roles. Pay around Level 7. Popular because of central government status and decent growth to Income Tax Officer through departmental exam.
Central Excise / Preventive Officer / Examiner (CBIC) — Customs and central excise work at ports, airports, and industrial areas. Preventive officers do anti-smuggling field duty; examiners handle cargo inspection. Posting can be coastal cities or land borders. Physically demanding in field roles.
CBI Sub-Inspector — Investigation work — raids, case files, court coordination. Highly sought after but fewer vacancies. Posting anywhere in India. Irregular hours during active cases. Not a 9-to-5 desk job.
Auditor and Accountant posts — mostly desk
Auditor (CAG / CGDA) — Audits government accounts in ministries, departments, and defence establishments. Mostly office work, travel for audit parties. Pay Level 5–6. Good for candidates who prefer structured desk roles with occasional travel.
Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO) in CAG — Higher than auditor — Level 7. Handles audit planning, report drafting, and supervising audit teams. Needs a good grasp of accounting standards and government financial rules.
Tax Assistant (TA) — entry point in tax departments
Works in CBDT or CBIC at Level 4. Data entry, return processing, answering queries, and supporting senior officers. Many Income Tax Inspectors started as Tax Assistants and got promoted internally. Lower pay than inspector but less field pressure. Good first central government job if your rank is moderate.
Assistant in ministries — general administration
Posted in central ministries (MEA, MHA, etc.) at Level 4–5. File movement, note sheets, coordination, and protocol work. MEA Assistant gets foreign posting opportunities after years of service — that is why it is one of the most preferred posts despite moderate initial pay.
Quick comparison table
| Post | Work type | Pay level | Posting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income Tax Inspector | Field + desk | Level 7 | Any city — tax circles |
| Auditor (CAG) | Desk + audit travel | Level 5–6 | State capitals, dept offices |
| Tax Assistant | Desk | Level 4 | Income tax offices |
| AAO (CAG) | Desk + supervision | Level 7 | Audit offices nationwide |
| CBI Sub-Inspector | Field investigation | Level 7 | Anywhere — case based |
| MEA Assistant | Admin + foreign posting later | Level 4–5 | Delhi first, then abroad |
Quick tip: Fill preferences based on work lifestyle, not just salary. A candidate who hates field duty should rank Auditor and TA above Inspector posts — even if inspector pay is higher.
Watch out: Some posts have specific physical standards (CBI, excise preventive) or require graduation in a particular subject. Read post-wise eligibility in the notification before preferring a post you cannot legally hold.
