SSC CGL vs SSC CHSL — Which Exam Should You Target First?

Basic difference in one line
SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) is for graduates — Group B and Group C posts like inspector, auditor, assistant, and tax assistant. SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is mainly for 12th pass candidates — LDC, JSA, PA, SA, and DEO posts. If you have a graduation degree, you qualify for CGL. CHSL is still open to you, but the ceiling is lower.

Who should target CGL first?
If you are a graduate — or in final year with result expected before DV — CGL should be your primary target. The posts are better paid, carry more responsibility, and open doors to departments like CBI, NIA, Income Tax, and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for certain posts. Yes, the syllabus is wider and Tier 2 maths is tougher. But the return on effort is significantly higher.

When CHSL makes sense as a first exam
CHSL is the right first step if you are 12th pass and not yet graduated. A CHSL job gives you financial stability while you pursue graduation through distance or evening college. Many LDC and JSA holders later clear CGL or state PSC while working. The typing test and skill test in CHSL need dedicated practice — do not treat it as an easy backup.
Graduates sometimes apply for CHSL thinking it is a shortcut. It is not. You will be competing for lower-grade posts against candidates who have prepared specifically for typing speed and CHSL-level maths. That is a poor trade unless you urgently need any central government job.
Can you prepare for both together?
Tier 1 syllabus overlaps heavily — reasoning, general awareness, English, and quantitative aptitude. If you are a graduate, prepare at CGL level. When a CHSL notification drops, your CGL prep covers 80% of it. The reverse does not work as well — CHSL-level maths prep will leave you short in CGL Tier 2.

- Graduate, age on your side: CGL first, always.
- 12th pass, under 21: CHSL now, graduation alongside, then CGL.
- Graduate but weak in maths: Strengthen Tier 2 maths for 2–3 months, then attempt CGL. CHSL as backup only if age or attempts are running out.
- Working professional with limited time: CHSL if you need a job within a year; CGL if you can commit 8–10 months of serious study.
Quick tip: If you are a graduate, register for CGL the moment the notification drops — even if your preparation is 70% done. Missing an attempt because you waited for "perfect" readiness is a common regret among SSC aspirants.
Watch out: SSC counts attempts and has strict age limits. Check the notification for post-specific age and qualification requirements — some CGL posts need specific subjects in graduation (like Statistics for Statistical Investigator).
