NCC Certificate — Does It Really Help in Government Jobs?
Does an NCC certificate help in SSC, UPSC, police, or defence jobs? Learn where bonus marks apply, which certificate (A/B/C) matters, and common myths.
The short answer
An NCC (National Cadet Corps) certificate can help — but only in specific exams and only if you hold the right certificate type with valid documentation. It is not a universal bonus for every Sarkari job. Treat it as a targeted advantage for defence, police, and some central/state recruitments that explicitly mention NCC in their notification.
Types of NCC certificates
- Certificate A — Junior division/wing (school level). Rarely quoted for graduate-level jobs.
- Certificate B — Senior division, intermediate level. Accepted in some state police and lower-level posts where notification allows.
- Certificate C — Highest level, after minimum camp attendance and exam. Most commonly cited for bonus marks or age relaxation in central notifications.
Always read the exact wording: some notifications require "C certificate with minimum B grade" or "attended Republic Day camp."
Where NCC actually matters
Defence and CAPF: NDA, CDS, and CAPF notifications have historically given weightage or relaxed criteria for NCC C certificate holders in specific entries — check current year rules.
Police recruitment: Several state police constable and SI notifications award 2–5 bonus marks for NCC certificates.
SSC and other central exams: Bonus is notification-specific. Do not assume CGL or CHSL always give marks — verify the latest advertisement.
Direct entry schemes: Some departmental posts (e.g. military nursing, certain apprentice schemes) mention NCC as desirable or qualifying.
Quick tip: Download the official NCC certificate and bonafide letter from your unit. Carry NCC identity card and camp certificates if the notification asks for camp-specific credit.
What NCC does not do
- It does not replace educational qualification or age eligibility
- It does not automatically qualify you for defence officer entry without clearing the prescribed exam
- Certificate B alone rarely helps for graduate-level central posts unless notification says so
- Expired or unattested copies are not accepted at document verification
How to claim NCC benefit correctly
Tick the NCC option in the application form only if you hold a valid certificate on the cutoff date stated in the notification. Upload scanned certificate during application if required. At document verification, officials verify serial number, issuing unit, and grade. Any false claim leads to cancellation of candidature.

Should you join NCC only for a job?
NCC C certificate takes years of attendance, camps, and tests. If you are already in college with NCC available, it is worth pursuing for discipline, parade training, and potential bonus in police/defence pipelines. If you are a working graduate with no NCC background, focus on exam preparation instead — no shortcut certificate exists for C level. Colleges with active NCC units usually announce enrollment in first year — ask the ANO (Associate NCC Officer) about camp schedules early.
Sports and other bonus certificates
NCC is one of several optional credentials — sports, NSS, and ex-serviceman status follow similar rules: only claim if the notification lists them and you have valid proof. Mixing up bonus categories on the form creates problems at DV when officials cannot match certificates to your declaration.
