🎓 UPSC ESE 2027 Educational Qualification

Candidates must possess the prescribed engineering qualification for admission to the examination.

A candidate must have:

• A degree in Engineering from a recognised university/institution established under Indian law; or

• Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India), subject to the conditions prescribed in the notification; or

• An engineering degree/diploma from a recognised foreign university/institution under the conditions specified by the Government; or

• Passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or

• Passed the prescribed examinations of the Aeronautical Society of India; or

• Passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London, held after November 1959.

There are additional qualification provisions for certain services under the Electronics & Telecommunication category. For example, specified M.Sc. qualifications may also be accepted for the Indian Naval Armament Service and Indian Radio Regulatory Service as prescribed in the notification.

Candidates whose qualifying examination result has not yet been declared may also apply in the circumstances permitted by the notification. However, they must produce proof of the required qualification within the prescribed period if called for the Personality Test/Interview.

Important Qualification Note

The notification states that degrees/certificates obtained from the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) and Aeronautical Society of India by candidates taking admission after 31 May 2013 will not be admissible for ESE 2027. The eligibility of certain Institution of Engineers (India) qualifications obtained after that date is subject to the Government's decision as specified in the notification.

🎂 UPSC ESE 2027 Age Limit

As on 1 January 2027, candidates must:

• Have attained 21 years of age, and

• Must not have attained 30 years of age.

Therefore, candidates must have been born not earlier than 2 January 1997 and not later than 1 January 2006.

Age Relaxation

The exact applicability of relaxation is subject to the conditions specified in the UPSC notification. SC/ST/OBC candidates who also qualify under certain other relaxation categories may receive cumulative relaxation where permitted.

💰 UPSC ESE 2027 Application Fee

The prescribed examination fee is ₹200.

Female, SC, ST and eligible PwBD candidates are exempt from payment of the examination fee. OBC and EWS candidates are not exempt and must pay the prescribed ₹200 fee.

📝 UPSC ESE 2027 Selection Process

The UPSC Engineering Services Examination is conducted in three stages:

Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination

Stage 2 – Main Examination

📚 UPSC ESE 2027 Exam Pattern

Stage-I: Preliminary Examination

Paper-II will be based on the candidate's selected engineering discipline:

The Preliminary Examination is objective type.

Negative Marking

There is negative marking in the objective papers. For an incorrect answer, one-third (1/3rd) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.

If more than one answer is marked, it is treated as a wrong answer. No penalty is imposed for a question left unanswered.

Stage-II: Main Examination

Each Main Examination paper has a duration of 3 hours. The papers are conventional/descriptive type.

Stage-III: Personality Test

The Personality Test/Interview carries 200 marks and has no minimum qualifying marks specified for the interview stage itself. Final ranking is determined using marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Personality Test/Interview, subject to the applicable rules.
